The sweltering heat of summer doesn’t deter the young from making the best of their two-month vacation. While some go on a holiday, others choose to do internships which they feel will give them an edge over their peers and add more value to their resume.

Internships, feel most students, give them a feel of the industry they wish to work in. It helps them find a job easily. Geo, a final year BBM student from the Baldwin Methodist College, says, “I thought it is important to do an internship because I was sure it will help me find a good job once I am done with my course. I am doing my internship at HAL. I wanted to do something productive instead of wasting my time. Whatever I learn during an internship will come in handy in my career. And of course it will boost my confidence.”

There was a time when only the final year students did internships. Now, most students in the first, second and third year undergraduate courses are doing an internship during the summer vacation. The more the merrier is their concept. Alok, a second-year Visual Arts student from Chitrakala Parishath, says “My holidays will begin shortly and I am sure I will get bored so I decided to sign up for an internship related to my field. This will not only help me utilise my time but develop my contacts and enhance my learning experience.”

Internships also help students earn that extra pocket money. Some internships don’t pay but provide ample exposure.

Anamika, a second year B Com student, Seshadripuram College, says “This summer I have got an internship to assist an accountant to maintain accounts in a firm. This is related to my field and the best part is that I get paid for it. So I get to work, learn and earn for my hard work as well. What more can I ask for?”
