Renukacharya prefers late bar hours

The Minister on Tuesday said he would look into the long-pending demand for extending the time to sell liquor beyond 11 pm in Bangalore city limits.

“I don’t think there is anything wrong in extending the time. It will not only earn extra revenue to the Government, but help promote tourism,” he told reporters.

Renukacharya, however, said he will first consult with officers of his department before taking a decision.

He further said many cities in the country have extended night life hours. Bar owners had been demanding the extension of time.

‘No hike in liquor price’

Renukacharya said there is no proposal to hike liquor prices in the State. “I do not want to burden people by increasing the rate. Besides, if the liquor price is hiked, people may take to consuming cheap liquor. Hence, we do not want to hike the price,” he stated.

The Minister, who inspected Chinnaswamy stadium during a recent IPL match to check allegations of illegal sale of liquor, said he found no violation of rules. The department had given permission to sell liquor at five places and everything was as per the rule book, he added.
