Ruckus in the Parliament

After the verdict, the Congress on Thursday demanded an explanation from the government in both Houses of Parliament on the BJP's sustained political campaign focusing on the 2G scam.

"Where did all the allegations go? Because of such propaganda, you (BJP) moved from this side (Opposition benches) to that side (treasury benches)," Leader of the Opposition and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said in the Rajya Sabha.

Till now, the Congress was only demanding a  response from  Prime Minister Narendra Modi  on former prime minister Manmohan Singh, but that now they want  a response on this issue as well. The prime minister was not present in the House.

In the Lok Sabha, senior Congress leader M Verappa Moily said former  Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai, who estimated a loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the exchequer due to the 2G scam, should resign from all the positions that he occupies and return the rewards he has received.  The Congress then staged a walkout.

In both Houses, Congress members were demanding answers from BJP and Modi on their continuous campaign on the 2G scam in the run-up to the last parliamentary elections, as well as the prime minister's comments  about  his predecessor.

Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said he was not allowing Azad's submission as he had not given any notice.

He asked the Congress members to return to their seats. In defiance, they rushed to the Well, raising slogans against Modi and the ruling party.

Naidu cited a May 22, 1990 ruling of the then Rajya Sabha Chairman Shankar Dayal Sharma on how the Chair's ruling is final  in determining whether the Question Hour could be suspended or a discussion be permitted.

With Naidu's efforts to calm down the Opposition falling on deaf ears, he adjourned the House till 2 pm.

Thursday being the question day for the prime minister's Office, Modi was expected to be present during the Question Hour, which was slated  for noon.

But the Question Hour didn't take place as the Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm. In the Lok Sabha, the Congress returned in the post-lunch session.
