The union of the Bangalore University's Postgraduation and Research Students protested against the gang-rape and murder of a Dalit schoolgirl in Vijayapura, and demanded the police track down and punish the culprits.
Members of the union resorted to sloganeering. They charged that there has been continued sexual harassment against girls and women. If the government fails to initiate action, the union will stage protests across the state, they said.
According to university professor T H Murthy, the law and order situation in the state has completely collapsed, as a result of which school and college students live in fear.
Meanwhile, the police detained those who tried to attack the Jnanabharathi police station. They were released later.
