Chikkamagaluru bandh: Cops lathicharge to disperse crowd

Opposing the arrest of members of pro-Kannada organisations for closing down schools and colleges for the bandh in Chikkamagaluru on Friday, the members of Kannada, Dalit and other progressive organisations attempted to lay siege to the police station on Saturday. As a result, the police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the crowd.

Condemning the rape and murder of a minor girl in Vijayapura, the members of Kannada, Dalit and other progressive organisations had given a call for Chikkamaagaluru bandh on Friday. The police arrested Mohankumar and others for closing down the schools. Opposing the move by the police, the protesters demanded the release of the arrested leaders which led to an altercation between the police and protesters. In order to disperse the crowd, the police resorted to lathi charge and brought the situation under control within 10 minutes.

Following the bandh call, all shops and business establishments on I G Road, M G Road and market roads had remained closed. Protesters had forcibly closed down schools and colleges and a few banks that were functioning. However, KSRTC and private buses operated as usual.

Action against violators

Speaking to reporters, SP Annamalai K said, "nobody can forcibly close down schools and colleges. We had arrested 10 people from Kannada and Dalit organisations who had gained entry into schools. Action will be initiated against those who had violated the law."
