Construction and Demolition waste a grave issue: citizen group

Last Updated 24 December 2017, 01:44 IST

The issue of Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste in the city was discussed by citizens and members of Vijinapura Eco Civic team (VECT) with the Mayor R Sampath Raj.

Members of VECT insisted that all the wards of the city should set up a C&D waste processing centre. VECT convenor, Shilpa Narayan, presented the urgency in handling the C&D waste, which is turning into a grave issue. The waste is dumped into lakes, lake beds, rajakaluve causing flooding, building collapse etc.

A demand letter was presented by the members to the Mayor and other officials with a specific point on C&D waste handling. It highlighted dumping prevention, monitoring, processing and collection, transportation and segregation at the source of C&D waste.

Shilpa Narayan said "The city is the fourth largest C&D waste generator in the country, generating 3600 tonnes of it per day. We request the BBMP to bring the C&D Management Rules-2016 in action for the city."

Mayor R Sampath Raj asked the members to visit the disposal sites next month with officials for inspection and take stringent actions to stop dumping. "Some people carry this waste overnight and dump it in the lakes. I have directed officials to take action against them. The issue will be raised at the next council meeting," he assured.
