Ready for debate on Veerashaiva-Lingayat issue: Dingaleshwar Swamiji

Sri Dingaleshwar Swamiji of Balehosur stated that seers and thinkers who are arguing that Veerashaiva and Lingayat are the same are ready to come for a debate with those who are claiming Lingayat alone is a separate religion, at Moorusaviramutt in Hubballi on December 30 and 31, as challenged by MLC Basavaraj Horatti.

Speaking to media persons here on Tuesday, the seer noted that they are ready for either open or closed-door discussion, while they have proofs to show that Veerashaiva and Lingayat are not separate.

Mr Horatti should disclose the timings of the discussion, and who would be in the discussion. The discussion should not be postponed, and peace should not be disturbed. He should have done this before starting Lingayat separate religion agitation, the seer said.

"Politics and religion should not be mixed, but that is being done now unfortunately. Political leaders should resign to their positions if they want to intervene in religious issues. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah wants to divide the community and therefore, he asked ministers to lead Lingayat agitation. Those who argued for Lingayat separate religion are in the expert panel formed by the minority commission, and they lack proper knowledge of history and tradition. The committee should visit all places and should collect the opinion of people and seers. We are trying to unite the community, and if that is done, there would be no need for the report of the committee," Sri Dingaleshwar Swamiji said.

On Mahadayi issue

Instead of showing so much interest to promote Lingayat separate religion movement to divide the community before Asssmbly elections, the government should have focused on Mahadayi issue. Some seers who were active in Mahadayi agitation earlier, have forgotten that now, and are busy with Lingayat issue. We have expressed support to the agitation, he added.
