Imphal to host Indian Science Congress

The 105th Indian Science Congress, postponed at the eleventh hour, will be held in March at Manipur University in Imphal.

At an emergency executive committee meeting on Wednesday, the Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) decided to shift the five-day Congress on January 3 at Osmania University in Hyderabad to Imphal.

It would be held sometimes in March 2018, the ISCA said in a notice. The exact dates would be decided later depending on the availability of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Osmania University backed out of the annual congregation of scientists citing student unrest at the campus.

The government sources said such last minute cancellation was unheard of in the 104 years of history of the Science Congress.

The General President of the 105th session was Achyut Samantha, who heads the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology and Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences, Bhubaneswar.

This is the second time the Science Congress would be hosted by an university from the North East. The 96th session of the Congress in 2009 was held at the North Eastern Hill University in Shillong.

Since March 2017, the border state is headed by a BJP government with N Biren Singh as the chief minister.
