Sindhu stars in Smashers' first victory

PV Sindhu fought back from a game down against Zhang Beiwen to star in Chennai Smashers' 4-3 victory over Mumbai Rockets in Premier Badminton League at the Sirifort Sports Complex on Wednesday.

Sindhu stunned the crowd when she lost in the opening game. But she bounced back with authority to subdue Beiwen 12-15, 15-7, 15-9. The World No 3 Indian made a stream of errors in the opening game. She though quickly seized control and once she did, the American of Chinese origin stood no chance. Sindhu was at her attacking best in the second and third games, pumping her fists and letting out a roar, and in no time Chennai were leading 2-1.

"I was making too many unforced errors in the first game. But I was confident to comeback. In the third game she went into the lead but I was not nervous and after the change of side I finished comfortably. It was not an easy match," Sindhu said.

The tie began at revised timing of 7 pm, and Mumbai were off to a bright start when their men's doubles pairing of Lee Yong Dee and Tan Boon Heong dominated B Sumeeth Redddy and Lee Yang 15-9, 15-6.

With Sindhu set to star in women's singles, Mumbai were hoping for Sameer Verma to do the star turn in men's singles the way he did against Delhi Dashers. Against Frenchman Brice Leverdez, the 23-year-old Indian put up a thrilling fight but faltered on crucial points. Sameer saved two match points before going down 14-15, 15-10, 14-15 as Chennai levelled 1-1.

Mumbai then stormed into 3-2 lead through their Trump match when former World No.1 Son Wan Ho beat Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk 15-11, 15-5. It all then depended on the trump match of Chennai that featured the mixed doubles encounter. The husband-wife duo of Gabrielle Adcock and Chris Adcock overcame a second game slump to beat Gabriela Stoeva and MR Arjun 15-9, 13-15, 15-9 to seal the first win of the season for Chennai.
