BJP activist hacked to death in Surathkal

Tension prevailed in and around Surathkal on the outskirts of Mangaluru after a BJP activist was hacked to death on Wednesday.

According to the police, the deceased Deepak Rao (32), was riding his bike at Krishnapura when four assailants who came in a car waylaid him and attacked him with sharp weapons.

Rao, a resident of Katipalla, was working as an executive in a mobile and SIM cards distribution shop. He used to be a Bajrang Dal activist, said police commissioner T R Suresh.

The incident occurred when he was returning after collecting some documents from
his shop owner Abdul Majid. On hearing his scream, Majid and his neighbours rushed to the spot. But by then, the miscreants fled the spot.

The body was shifted to a private hospital in Mangaluru for post-mortem, where a large number of Hindu activists gathered. A case has been registered in Surathkal police station following a complaint by his relative.

Surathkal area was tense and all shops and business establishments voluntarily pulled down their shutters. A private city bus was damaged by miscreants in Soorinje, near Surathkal after the incident.

Two DySPs and 100 police personnel from Kodagu, 200 police personnel from Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate jurisdiction, six KSRP platoons and six CAR platoons have been deployed.
