Apathy mars Bannur villagers' life

Last Updated 06 January 2018, 17:09 IST

Schoolchildren struggle on a day to day basis for want of proper transport facilities to their school. The children cross a dangerous footbridge every day risking their well-being to reach school and back home as there is no other connecting road.

On the other hand, the houses in the Kabbinamannu village where a maximum number of people belonging to SC/ST dwell in, are deprived of electricity and proper housing facilities. The people here have been fighting to get the title deeds for the last 30 years.

The village near Balehonnur in Narasimharajapura falls under the limits of Bannur Gram Panchayat. Around 35 families in the tiny village are lacking basic amenities.

A local resident, Krishnamurthy, said that they are not provided with title deeds even though they have been residing in the place for many years. The memorandum submitted to the tahsildar and Forest Right committee have yielded no response, he added.

The children from the locality have to cross the footbridge to attend school. They have to remain at home during the rainy season due to floods. As they lack proper motorable roads, the people literally carry daily commodities from the market to their houses. The residents of Kabbinamannu have no other source of drinking water apart from a contaminated water pond about three furlongs away.

Though a well has been dug by Bannur Panchayat, there is no protective wall. Two people died after falling into the 20 feet deep well. But the Gram Panchayat has not taken any preventive measure said people of the colony.

Dalit Sangharsha Samiti district convener D Ramu said that 16 students study in the lower primary school and there are two teachers. The land belonging to the school is encroached by a villager. If he does not clear the encroachment the DSS will stage a protest, he said.

People alleged that the Anganwadi in the locality opens as late as 11 am in the morning. The Rangamandira in the school premises built at a cost of Rs 4 lakh is totally defunct and no programmes can be performed.

The ZP member from the region, Chandramma, has not been seen after the elections, the villagers said.
