Militant killed in encounter in Kashmir's Budgam

Last Updated 08 January 2018, 19:48 IST

One militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in Chadoora area of central Kashmir's Budgam district on Monday.

Sources said that army's Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a search operation in Patrigam village of Chadoora in Budgam, 22 km from here, after inputs about presence of three militants.

"During the search operation, the militants fired on security forces and tried to flee. Security forces retaliated and one of the hiding ultras was killed in intense firing," sources said.

Additional Director General of Police Muneer Khan said only one militant was killed in the encounter. "The reports that three militants were killed in the gunfight are baseless. The body of one militant has been recovered and the operation has ended," he said.

Earlier, local media had reported that three militants were killed. However, sources said two militants managed to break the security cordon while the encounter was on.

Reports said that soon after the news about the encounter spread, civilians, mostly youth, took to streets in Chadoora and adjoining areas and started throwing stones at security forces who resorted to teargas shelling and aerial shots to disperse them. Authorities snapped Internet services in Budgam and neighbouring Pulwama districts to prevent 'rumour mongering' on social media.

The encounter comes just two days after four policemen were killed and one injured in a powerful IED blast in north Kashmir's Sopore town. It was the first encounter of this year.
