Two local militants killed in Anantnag encounter

Two local militants were killed in an ongoing encounter with security forces in Larnow area of Kokernag in south Kashmir's Anantnag district on Tuesday.

Sources said that Army's Rashtriya Rifles and special operations group (SOG) of J&K police launched a search operation in Larnow, Kokernag, after specific input about presence of three militants there.

"During the search operation, militants fired on security forces and tried to flee from the area. Security forces retaliated and so far two ultras have been killed ," they said and added the operation was still going on.

The slain militants were identified as Mohammad Furhan Wani and Mohammad Farnham Wani, both locals.

Reports said soon after the news about the encounter spread, civilians, mostly youth took to streets in the area and started pelting stones on security forces who resorted to tear gas shelling to disperse them. Authorities snapped Internet services in the district to prevent 'rumor mongering' on social media.

The encounter comes a day after one militant was killed in a similiar gunfight in central Kashmir's Budgam district on Monday. Two militants reportdely escaped from Monday's encounter.
With militancy, especially home grown, on rise, security forces have launched a massive operation to flush out the ultras. Nearly 220 militants were killed in 2017, which was highest in the last eight years. The security forces are going after militants as part of "operation all out" and on the basis of a "hit list" of militants.
