Dept gets nod to axe trees for DC office complex

The Forest department has reportedly received orders to cut 666 trees in the site identified for construction of a new DC office complex at Alake village in Padil.

It may be recalled that Deputy Conservator of Forests Karikalan had said that 95 people had submitted a petition against cutting down of trees and 94 others had submitted their consent to cut the trees during the public hearing held on January 4. He said that people had also responded through e-mails which will also be considered and a decision on felling of trees will be arrived at after looking into the feasibility of the project and considering public interest.

According to sources, more than 1,000 e-mails have been received and a majority of them are against felling of trees.

When contacted, activist Suma Nayak said that as per the rule, an opportunity should be given to appeal before the Tree Authority.

It may be noted that activists who have been opposing the felling of trees had initiated a social media campaign to urge the public to file their objections against the felling of trees.
