Tiger census starts in Bhadra Sanctuary

Tiger Census has started in Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary and will go on till January 13, Bhadra Tiger Project Director Kantaraj said.

He said that the Tiger Census is being done in all tiger projects in the state.

The census of the first phase has started. The process consists of four phases. The census of carnivorous animals will be held in three days and the census of herbivorous animals will also be held for three days, he added.

Bhadra forest is spread across an area of 503 sqkm, with 38 beats. Each census team comprises of four members and one of them is a volunteer. A total of 155 members and 36 volunteers will take part in the census, he said. The Tiger Census will start at 6 am. Every team will cover five km and will share the details through WhatsApp groups.

The animals are counted on the basis of their footprints, faeces and scratch marks on trees.

Herbivorous animals are counted in the line trajectory method. The forest area has been divided into 76 lines and two persons will travel in a line of two km.

Another phase of census will be held in March and April where the census will be conducted by using camera.
