Rebellion: Justice Dipak Mishra has company in Nepal CJ

Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra has a companion in Nepal when it comes to facing trouble from colleagues.

If the press conference of four Supreme Court judges putting Chief Justice Dipak Mishra in the line of fire rocked the country on Friday, Nepal had its share of shock two days ago when its Supreme Court ordered a probe against its Chief Justice Gopal Prasad Parajuli.

While Misra is facing accusation from his brother judges over allocation of work to benches of his "preference" and over-all administration of the apex court, Parajuli is at the eye of a controversy over his citizenship and date of birth.

On Wednesday, a bench comprising Justices Purushottam Bhandari and Bam Kumar Shrestha of Nepal Supreme Court ordered investigation into the authenticity of Justice Parajuli's citizenship document and education certificates. This came during a contempt of court case against an activist Dr Govinda KC, who had alleged that Justice Parajuli was "corrupt".

Nepal media has reported that Parajuli had instructed a Supreme Court staff to file a contempt case against the activist, who was "critical of the apex court's controversial rulings" affecting medical education sector. The court also ordered the release of the activist.

Parajuli is accused of possessing two citizenship cards procured through fraud and that he changed his date of birth in the second one to enable him to assume the post of Chief Justice.

While a number of senior judges have favoured an investigation against the Chief Justice of Nepal, Nepal Times and Himalayan Times reported that there are also calls from a section of jurists that Justice Parajuli should resign from the post.

Presenting a long list of judgements made by the court in favour of private medical colleges, Kathmandu Post reported, the activist had accused the judiciary of serving the interests of "mafias and medical college owners".
