New Lingayat forum to press for separate religion status

New Lingayat forum to press for separate religion status

A new Vishwa Lingayat Parishat, will be formed to intensify the campaign for the  Lingayat faith to be accorded the status of a separate religion.

The new forum was announced here on Saturday, by retired IAS officer S M Jaamdar, who is spearheading the Lingayat religion campaign.

"The decision to create the Vishwa Lingayat Parishat is the result of our unfruitful attempts to make peace with the All India Veerashaiva Mahasabha," Jaamdar told a press conference.

The Veerashaiva and Lingayat camps, comprising religious leaders as well as members of the ruling Congress, have been at loggerheads over the issue.

The Veerashaiva group holds that Veerashaiva and Lingayat are the same and that the separate religion should be christened Veerashaiva-Lingayat.

The Lingayat camp argues that Veerashaiva and Lingayat are radically different, and the religion must be called Lingayat.

"For the past eight months, we have tried to work together with the Veerashaiva Mahasabha, but they seem to be sticking to their stand," Jaamdar said.

The Vishwa Lingayat Parishat will be formally launched in Bengaluru on January 23 and will be registered by the end of this month, he added.
