Companies complain about poor quality water

Last Updated 14 January 2018, 19:37 IST

Treated water supply to some government and private companies has been  disrupted for the past few months due to problems in the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewage Board (BWSSB) pipelines.

Officials in the board fiercely denied they had problems.

The BWSSB supplies tertiary treated water to the Kempegowda International Airport, Bharath Electronics Limited, Indian Tobacco Company, Rail Wheel Factory and the Indian Air Force.

One of the companies said it did not get water from the board for two months. The quality of water had deteriorated so much that it considered setting up additional treatment plants to purify the water before use.

Sources in the company said the water they initially received was of good quality. But it subsequently began to deteriorate and smelt foul in recent months. They admitted  not having received water for two months, owing to issues in the supply pipes.

The Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL)  said it had no disruption in receiving treated water from the BWSSB, which they use primarily for gardening and landscaping. An airport spokesperson said their maintenance crew did not find any quality issues. The KIA also has Cauvery water supply from the BWSSB for all other purposes.

Though water is treated to the highest quality at the tertiary treatment plant, it is only used for non-potable purposes.

Assistant executive engineer, BWSSB, Mohammed Hanif Yathnati refuted claims that they had problems in supplying water.

He said the board supplied four million litres per day (MLD) of water to the companies out of the 10 MLD treated. "We let the excess water into the nearby lakes," he added.
