BJP leaders rain promises on Bengaluru Rural district

New Vijayapura taluk, speeding up Metro link to airport among assurances

BJP leaders trained their guns at the ruling Congress for neglecting the development of Bengaluru Rural district despite its proximity to Bengaluru city, as the party's Nava Karnataka Nirmana Parivarthan Yatra traversed through the district on Tuesday.

'Farmers faced injustice'

The leaders, in their speeches, touched upon issues like "injustice" being meted out to farmers who lost their prime land for various projects and the government's failure to ensure supply of water for drinking and irrigation needs in the parched taluks.

In Devanahalli and Doddaballapur, BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa promised that he would provide a clean and transparent administration if voted to power. He said the yatra had received overwhelming response in the 192 Assembly segments it has so far traversed since its launch on November 2 last year. "The response has given me confidence to say that we will win more than the mission 150 seats set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah (party national president)," Yeddyurappa said.

Yeddyurappa said the Devanahalli taluk housed an airport of international standards, which he said was a contribution of the NDA regime led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

"What has the Congress government done to the taluk?" he said. The former chief minister promised a new taluk - Vijayapura (also known as Vadigenalli) (a fast-growing economic hub with its silk cocoon market) - will be carved out from the district, if voted to power. The demand for the new taluk has been growing in the region for the last three to four years.

Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Ananth Kumar said he will impress upon the Centre to make it mandatory for the mega industries in Bengaluru Rural to reserve their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds for the improvement of the district. He said the Centre will take steps to expedite the 'Namma Metro' link to the Kempegowda International Airport.

The yatra concludes in Mysuru on January 25, and the party is planning to invite top central leaders to address the rally there. A mega convention at Palace Grounds in Bengaluru, scheduled to be addressed by Modi, is likely to be held on February 4.
