Cop who questioneddrunk gang assaulted

A group of armed men attacked a 50-year-old police constable when he went to check on a public nuisance complaint in JJ Nagar late on Wednesday.

Rajendra, the constable, was rushed to Victoria Hospital while his colleagues launched a city-wide search for the assailants.

Around 2 am, constable Rajendra got to know about a commotion on 11th B Cross, near Iyengar Bakery.

Driving a Hoysala patrol, he reached the spot and found four drunk men standing around and talking loudly.

He told them not to disturb the neighbours. When he ordered them to disperse, one of them hit him with a machete. The group then fled.

Within minutes, police put up barricades across the city. They suspect history-sheeter Aleem and his gang attacked Rajendra.

"We have identified the prime accused, but he is yet to be arrested," said B K Singh, additional commissioner of police.

Bagalagunte police arrested two men on Tuesday for roughing up constables on duty on Pipeline Road.

The constables stopped three men riding on a Pulsar motorbike and sought to see vehicle documents.

In the argument that ensued, Suneeth Kumar (23) and Prashanth (23), and Kiran jostled with the police.

Passers-by helped nab Kumar and Prashanth, but Kiran fled.

City police commissioner T Suneel Kumar said beat policing had been intensified in the wake of increased chain-snatching incidents.

In a third incident, Anil Kumar, a constable attached to the Bagalagunte police station, sustained injuries when he was trying to nab Om Suman, named in a kidnapping case. Suman rammed his bike into Kumar and fled, police said.
