1 killed, 3 injured as wall collapses

A 36-year-old labourer died and three others sustained injuries after a portion of a wall collapsed on them.

The incident took place at an under-construction site near Bull Temple Road in Basavanagudi.

The deceased has been identified as Shabarish. His wife Shankaramma and another couple, Simhadri and Padma, sustained minor injuries.

The victims are all natives of Andhra Pradesh and were residing in sheds in Babusapalya near Banasawadi.

The Shankarapuram police have filed a case of negligence against the contractor and the site owner for not taking safety measures. Both are reportedly absconding.

According to a senior police officer, the contractor dropped off the four labourers at the site around 10 am and left.

An earthmover was being used to dig the ground, while the victims were shifting the mud nearby. Around 11.30 am, a portion of a wall around the victims collapsed.

Shabarish and Shankaramma were trapped under the mud, while Simhadri and Padma managed to escape. Shankaramma was rescued and admitted to Victoria Hospital. Shabarish died by the time the fire and emergency service personnel pulled him out from under the debris.

The police also said that neither the contractor nor the owner were supervising the site and there was were no safety measures in place.
