Paresh Dhanani takes charge as Leader of Opposition in Gujarat

Paresh Dhanani, the 41-year-old Congress legislator from Amreli constituency in Saurashtra region on Monday formally took charge as the Leader of Opposition in the Gujarat Assembly.

He took charge in presence of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Bharatsinh Solanki and other senior Congress leaders.

Dhanani, belonging to Leuva Patidar community, is a third time MLA and was handpicked by All India Congress Committee (AICC) president, Rahul Gandhi, for the post.

His appointment is also seen as part of the Congress' strategy to put up a Patidar leader to woo the community in the upcoming Parliamentary polls scheduled to be held in May 2019.

After taking charge as the Leader of Opposition, Dhanani said that like his predecessors, he would raise the voice of people in the House and work to end the BJP rule in the state by the next Assembly elections in 2022.

Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Madhusudan Mistry, former Leaders of Opposition in Gujarat Arjun Modhvadia and Shaktisinh Gohil as well as large number of Dhanani's supporters also remained present when the young Congress leader took charge.

The ruling BJP has appointed Kutch legislator Nimaben Acharya as pro-tem speaker and the newly elected legislators are slated to take oath on Tuesday.

In the recently concluded Assembly elections, Congress had improved its tally in 182-seat Gujarat Legislative Assembly from 60 to 77, compared to the 2012 polls, buoyed by the support of 24-year–old Hardik Patel.

In fact, Congress scored well in many of the Patidar dominated districts, including Amreli, Gir Somnath and Junagadh, bagging almost all the Assembly seats.
