Water scarcity: Farmers flay CMC

Last Updated 24 January 2018, 17:50 IST

The district Krishika Sangha has alleged that the city municipal administration is behaving harshly towards farmers as it has completely stopped power supply to the 68 pump sets in Baje and Shiroor reservoir area.

Speaking to reporters, district Krishika Sangha general secretary Srinivas Bhat Kudi said that there are nearly 350 families of farmers who are dependent on the agricultural activities in Baje area.

He added that the inflow has been stopped and water supply is being rationed. This is unfair as it is a matter of livelihood for the farmers.

He also said that a delegation of farmers would shortly approach the Deputy Commissioner and request her to release water at least once a week so that farmers can grow their crops.

Unless the farmers have their own wells, the paddy cultivation would have to be stopped in the region, said Srinivas Bhat. The farmers in the area are struggling for a drop of water and the irony is that reservoirs at Baje and Shiroor have several leakages which go unattended. The municipality was told about the problem, however, the administration has not taken any action, he alleged.

He said the power generation unit in the area is supposed to function until completion of the monsoons. But the unit stopped working on December 28 and the administration is blind towards it.
