MSIL denies sand import scam charge

Mysore Sales International Limited (MSIL) on Wednesday denied the charge made by Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly that a major scam had taken place in import of sand from Malaysia.

In a statement, MSIL managing director J C Prakash and chairman Hampanagouda Badarli have denied all charges made by Shettar at a press conference in Hubballi on Tuesday. They said only 935 tonnes of sand had been imported from Malaysia so far. Further imports will be made depending on the demand for sand in the market.

The statement said that when tenders were called for importing sand, two firms applied - Fiza Developers and Infrastructure Pvt Ltd and Poseidon FZE. However, Fiza Developers and Infrastructure had not uploaded any supporting documents. The contract was awarded to Poseidon FZE only after ensuring all tender specifications were met. The company quoted a price of Rs 2,300 per tonne which is a very reasonable rate in the market, the statement said.
