IPL controversy rocks both Houses

From pitch to Parliament: United Opposition demands JPC probe
Last Updated 23 April 2010, 18:35 IST

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee told the Lok Sabha that the Congress-led UPA government would take a decision (on the demand for a JPC probe into the IPL affairs) after “due diligence and considerations”.

But the opposition continued to disrupt the proceedings and the Speaker Meira Kumar and Deputy Speaker Karia Munda had to adjourn the House twice before lunch.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the rest of the day after the lunch, with the opposition MPs stalling the proceedings seeking a JPC probe into the IPL.

As soon as the LS met for the day, the Leader of the Opposition and senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj raised the issue stating that the IPL row was getting more and more serious day by day and a JPC probe should be ordered “to save the dignity of the House and to bring to light” all facts about the cricket tourney.

She said allegations were flying thick and fast that two senior ministers in the UPA government had a role to play in the controversy.
