Volunteers clean roads, drains in Mangaluru

Ramakrishna Mission carried out the 13th week's Swacchata Abhiyan drive in Pumpwell and Kankanady main roads on Sunday.

The drive was flagged off jointly by Swami Tyagananda, Head, Vedanta Society of Boston, USA and Vinay Hegde, Chancellor of Nitte University.

Speaking on the occasion, Swami Tyagananda said, "Cleanliness should be our first priority. The mentality of depending on the government agencies for everything should first change. Perseverance, patience and faith in the power of good all combined yield positive results."

Swami Jitakamananda said that work on cleanliness is equivalent to worshipping Mother Earth.

More than 400 delegates from nearly 20 districts participated in the 3-day devotees' convention held at Ramakrishna Mutt and all of them took part in the cleanliness drive.

Along with cleaning work, they also removed buntings, banners and other publicity materials illegally put up beside the road. They also cleaned road dividers and both sides of the roads by removing stones, sand and gravel. More than 3 tippers of garbage and debris were transported from the area.

Along with these delegates members of Team Vivek, Sri Sharada Mahila Vrinda, Nivedita Balaga, Swacch Yekkur team, Members of Havyaka Sabha and others actively participated in the drive.
