New SP warns of stringent action against trouble mongers

Dr B R Ravikanthe Gowda took charge as the Superintendent of Police of Dakshina Kannada on Monday.

Speaking to reporters after taking charge, he said that he will continue the work carried out by his predecessor in maintaining law and order in the district. The Police Department would be made more people friendly, he promised.

Dr Gowda also warned of initiating stringent action against trouble-mongers in the district. "Although Dakshina Kannada is a culturally rich district, it has also been identified as one of the sensitive districts in the state. Understanding the sensitivity, Police Department will work at maintaining the law and order situation, with the help and cooperation of all concerned," he said, and expressed confidence to handle any kind of challenge in the district.

On social media

To a query on social media being used to spread rumours, Ravikanthe Gowda said, "Healthy discussion on social media will be welcomed. However, strict action will be taken against those who try to incite disturbance by posting provocative messages. Let any discussion be fruitful and healthy. The social media will be monitored."

When asked for his opinion on illegal sand mining, Dr Gowda said that he will take action against all illegal activities including illegal sand mining in the district.

"In order to make the Police Department more people-friendly, an effort had been taken to set up a front office at all the police stations in Belagavi district. The front office helps the visitors to sit and read newspapers. It also has drinking water facility," he said.

He added that he would work at opening such front office at the police stations in Dakshina Kannada too.

Commands in Kannada

The police in Belagavi used commands in Kannada during the parade on January 26, 2016. It was the first instance of the commands being issued in the state's local language. To introduce a similar move across the state, a committee was formed and Ravikanthe Gowda was one of the committee members.

"The parade commands will be in Kannada across the state shortly. Measures will be taken to introduce it in Dakshina Kannada," Dr Gowda said.
