A 28-year-old truck driver died after losing control of the vehicle, and it crashed into a metro pier at the Dubasipalya junction on Mysuru Road on Wednesday morning.

Shivaiah had driven a cement-laden truck from Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh to Bengaluru. He unloaded some cement bags in the city and left for Mysuru.

The multi-axle (16-wheel) truck was travelling at top speed as it crashed into the metro pier near the Airavatha Highway Motel. The front part of the truck was mangled, and Shivaiah was crushed.

Passersby called the jurisdictional Kengeri traffic police and the fire brigade. The body had to be extricated from the mangled truck.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) said 10 steel fabricated barricade boards and a signboard on the left side of the road were completely damaged. It also maintained that there was no structural damage to the metro pier as the impact was borne by the crash barrier. The top portion of the crash barricade was slightly damaged and the flues of the pier suffered a slight disturbance.

According to the BMRCL, the truck was stuck inside the barricaded area, leaving the road largely free for traffic.

Shivaiah had been driving the truck to Bengaluru for the past eight years.
