No screening of Padmaavat in Gujarat as producer withdraws HC petition

The people in Gujarat may have to wait much longer for Padmaavat as the producer of the movie Viacom 18 Media Private Limited on Friday withdrew its application before the Gujarat High Court seeking adequate security for theatres to screen the film in the state.

In special hearing, Viacom 18 moved an application to withdraw its earlier petition before the Gujarat High Court seeking adequate security for cinema halls in the state willing to showcase the movie that had a nation-wide release on January 25.

The Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed movie, that had been facing stiff opposition from several groups across the nation, could be released only after the Supreme Court stayed notifications and orders issued by BJP-led governments in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, prohibiting the exhibition of the film.

Despite Supreme Court orders, the theatre owners in these states cited a series of requests and at times violent protests near their premises to desist from screening the movie. Theatre owners in Gujarat too followed suit and the state government welcomed their move.

Post this, Viacom 18 had approached the high court with a petition that the theatres be provided adequate security as some theater owners were willing to show the movie starring Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, but for threat from certain groups.

During the hearing in the court of Justice J B Pardiwala on Thursday, the petitioner had sought time till February 4 to submit additional information to substantiate its case. The state government, too, had sought more time for its reply.

However, on Friday, Viacom 18 made a request to withdraw its petition.
