Rain havoc in Udupi, Malnad

Power supply hit as more than 16 electricity poles were damaged

Heavy rains lashed over various parts of Udupi district along with thunderbolt and lightning from 3 am on Saturday. Several cattle have been killed and telephone lines have gone haywire at many places. A tree has been uprooted near District Court area. A tree fell over a house damaging the house to a very large extent near Diana theatre. A cellar of a house was inundated, sinking the car parked in the cellar.

Two houses have been struck by lightning at Hebri and Perdur. As many as 16 electricity poles fell, cutting off power supply. Hundreds of trees have been uprooted in the forest areas, sources informed.

Lightning struck the house of Sheena Harijana, resident of Perdur Alangaru and 5 members in the house have sustained severe injuries due to the lightning.

Mescom has estimated the loss at Rs 2 lakh. Property loss has been put at Rs 5.50 lakh in Brahmavara.  Kundapura received 86.4 mm rainfall followed by Udupi at 74.2 mm and Karkala at 2.2 mm rainfall.

In Kalasa huge area of agriculture land has been destroyed due to the rains and strong wind. A 200 year old tree at the residence of farmer Venkata Subbaiah has been uprooted destroying another 100 areca saplings.
