Uma Bharti won't contest 2019 polls

Union Sanitation and Water Supply Minister Uma Bharti  has announced that she will not contest 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

She said she was retiring from active politics due to health reasons. Uma, however, maintained that she will campaign and serve the party.

"I have back and knee problems that have restricted my mobility. I have, therefore, decided not to contest during the 2019 elections," she said at an interaction with reporters in her constituency of Jhansi a day ago.

Uma Bharti, who had earlier represented Khajuraho in Parliament, had never hidden her unhappiness after she was shifted from the Ministry of Ganga Rejuvenation and Water Resources to that of santiation and water supply last year.

In a recent interview, she had said, "I have been wondering why I am not comfortable in politics. There is some discomfort in politics; it has always been there since I became a parliamentarian in 1989. Now I am 58, but I feel I am still not politically settled. Politics is not my forte. If I am given a job, I will do it single-mindedly, but not from a political angle. Even in my Ayodhya andolan, there was no politics, just commitment."

A former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, Uma Bharti had quit the BJP to form her own party in 2005. Six years later, she rejoined the BJP and shifted to Uttar Pradesh's Bundelkhand region for her electoral politics.
