Mridangist Umayalapuram Sivaraman bats for global music university

Mridangist Umayalapuram K Sivaraman on Thursday said that the governments of the world should pool their resources to establish an academy of intellectual and pragmatic musicians to evolve a system of universal music.

He was delivering third convocational address of the Karnataka State Dr Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University, here. Sivaraman said there should be interactions with the global musicians and the governments should explore the possibilities of establishing a global university for music that propagates good music in any good form.

A total 29 undergraduate and 21 postgraduate students received their degrees. Out of 50 students, 45 were girls. As many as eight rank holders were presented with gold medals and cash prizes.

The varsity conferred honorary doctorate on musician R Sathyanarayana, who has created works in Bharathiya Sangeetha Shastra and in all its cognate subjects resulting in 126 books comprising 23 critical editions of Sanskrit treatises on music and dance, 32 original works, 27 translations and commentary, 13 edited works, 70 research papers and more than 200 articles adding up to 20,000 printed pages.

While Geetha Hebbar bagged two medals for her excellence in MA in Hindustani music, B K Mamatha bagged a medal. Vijaya bagged two medals for her achievement in Carnatic music and K N Hemalatha bagged one medal. Similarly, G Deepak Kumar and Arjun Pramod bagged a cash prize each for their excellence in Tabala.

M S Sindhu Rao bagged one medal and cash prize in Bharatanatya. Similarly, V Bharathi Mouli bagged one medal and a cash prize for excellence in Veena.

Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala, Music varsity Vice Chancellor Sarvamangala Shankar and others were present.
