JOIN USThe ancient and famous shrine of Goddess Tripura Sundari is located in Muguru village, about 10 km from Tirumakudalu Narasipura in Mysuru district. Tripura Sundari literally means 'one who is beautiful in the three worlds'. Devi in this form is reckoned as the ultimate shakti (energy or power) of the universe and also the supreme consciousness. She is considered as the union of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara. The sacred Srichakra is considered to represent the goddess in the form of Lalita or Tripura Sundari.
The temple at Muguru has high walls all around, decorated with small statuettes of Devi in different forms at the top. There is no rajagopura in the front, and the entry is through an arched mahadwara. There is an expansive parikrama inside the complex, with the main shrine placed on a high pedestal at the centre. A few steps take you to the small mukhamantapa with four pillars. The temple does not have intricate designs on the walls and pillars. But the medium-sized vimana over the garbhagriha displays beautiful carvings and colourful statuettes of Devi in different forms, on all sides. Inside the garbhagriha, Devi is placed in a sitting posture with Srichakra near her feet. The idol is made of black stone.
Sankranti festival is celebrated here during January every year with great fanfare. It is locally known as 'Chiguru Odoya Jaatre', and thousands of devotees visit the place to partake in the festivities. A speciality of the festival is that goddesses from the neighbouring villages, supposed to be the sisters of Tripura Sundari are brought out in a procession to Muguru.
