QUB, which has close links with Indian universities and is involved in India-centric research, said Kalam will be conferred the DUniv degree on June 10.

The university said: "Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, who served from 2002 to 2007, will receive a doctorate for public service.

"He is a distinguished engineer and is considered a progressive mentor, innovator and visionary in India, believing in the power of science to resolve society's problems.

"Popularly known as the 'People's President', Dr Kalam has educated and inspired others as a scientist, teacher, researcher, statesman and poet," it said.

Kalam is also scheduled to address students, academics and practitioners at the University of Cambridge's Judge Business School on June 9.
