The State cabinet on Thursday decided to bring in an amendment to the section 17 (1) of Karnataka State Universities Act, making a provision for the appointment of professors who have at least 10 years experience, as the Registrars (Administration), Home Minister V S Acharya told reporters after the cabinet meeting.

“Presently, there is a provision to appoint officers of the All India Services to the posts. The Government had been appointing either IPS or IFS officers as the Registrars (Administration). Now, a provision will be made for the appointment of either an IAS officer or an academician after bringing the amendment. The Government may promulgate an ordinance to this effect shortly,” he stated.

The Government’s move in the past to appoint academicians as the Registrars (Administration) had met with resistance. Even many of the Vice Chancellors had lodged a complaint against it to the Governor recently. Governor H R Bhardwaj, who is the Chancellor of Universities, had in turn directed the Government to follow the rules in letter and spirit.
However, the section 18(1) makes provision for appointing academicians as Registrar (Evaluation).

The State cabinet on Thursday decided to convene the State Legislature session for 20 days from June 10.
