Lotus, talk to the hand: Siddaramaiah tweets back

Last Updated 05 April 2018, 04:42 IST

Why watch a daily soap when you can see Twitter combat between the BJP and the Congress?

With the Karnataka elections closing in, a war of words between the political parties has become a daily event.

BJP on Wednesday attacked Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah with a Twitter picture of the CM campaigning for the Karnataka elections with a lemon in his hand. The tweet read: "Campaigns with a lemon in hand, but brings in Anti Superstitions Bill to demean and criminalise Hindu traditions. Hypocrisy thy name is @Siddaramaiah".

In his defence, Siddaramaiah tweeted a reply: “When you visit a village people welcome you with lemon. That this is not a superstition is known to all Kannadigas. Anti-Superstition Bill has become a law passed by Karnataka legislature. It does not demean any Hindu tradition. Learn about Karnataka before tweeting young fellows.”

Siddaramaiah didn’t stop there. He pointed the finger at the BJP and tweeted: “And if you spread #FakeNews about our Anti-Superstition Law criminalising or demeaning Hindu traditions, I&B Minister Smriti Irani will hit you with her circular! “

BJP went on to engage with the chief minister. They then tweeted: “Does fake claims on development also qualify as #FakeNews? If it does, you'll be the worst hit! Press Council of India, there is bounty of work for you if you visit Karnataka and examine all fake claims of @siddaramaiah. The Chief #FakeNews peddler looks already scared.”

BJP then tweeted about Siddaramaiah's age and called him a liar.

This election promises to be one with a large number of battles fought on social media. Stay tuned.
