Marriott eyes 200 hotels in 5 yrs

American hospitality giant Marriott International has evinced interest to increase its presence in the Indian market to 200 properties, over the next five years.

Marriott on Tuesday opened its 100th hotel in the country - the Sheraton Grand Bengaluru Whitefield Hotel & Convention Center here - which also happens to be the 15th property from the hotel group in the city.

Expressing the group's plans for India, Marriott International President and CEO Arne Sorenson said, "India has a lot of potential. We will open 15 hotels this year, and hit 50 in the next three years. At that pace, we aim at 200 hotels over the next five years."

India is among the few markets globally, where Marriott operates 100 more hotels, with the only others being China and the US.

After more than a decade of accelerated growth in India, Marriott today has more than 20,000 rooms and 15 brands in 32 cities. With over 30,000 people currently working for Marriott in the country, another 3,000 are expected to join the company this year.

Marriott's planned 50 new hotels will raise inventory to more than 30,000 rooms over the next few years, thanks to demand for mid-market hotels. Meanwhile, the 100th hotel of the group is a 360-room property, featuring 39 suites.
