'Goa paedophile must face stiffer charges'

John D’Souza, who ran a car rental business, was arrested in October 2008 and charged with grave sexual offences under the Goa Children’s Act and under Section 377 of the IPC. While his lawyers wrangled over the medical reports in the trial court on Wednesday, D’Souza sat through the proceedings with a smirk on his face and a red and gilt-edged Bible in his lap.

His abuse of the boy ran for three months and came to light only after the victim became seriously ill and tested positive for HIV at the Goa Medical College. The accused is HIV positive.

Public prosecutor Poonam Bharne told Deccan Herald that neither of the victim’s parents tested positive for the AIDS virus. The teenaged boy had not received a blood transfusion (one of the sources of infection) anytime before the HIV tests.
D’Souza may have knowingly transmitted the illness to his victim, says Bharne. The boy had to face rejection in school as well. What’s worse, no one knows if there are more victims out there. None has come forward to report abuse by the man.
