Last Updated 05 April 2018, 12:15 IST

It was celebration time for Chittoor as news of Gururaj Poojary's silver medal in weightlifting at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games spread in his hometown.

Son of Mahabala Poojary, a pick-up goods vehicle driver and Paddu Poojarthi, a home-maker, Gururaj is the fifth among six children of the couple.

Speaking to DH, Gururaj's father Mahabala Poojary said the entire family is elated.

"We had offered special prayers to Brahmalingeshwara and the Lord has heard our prayers," Mahabala Poojary said, adding that the family would celebrate once Gururaj returned home.

Hailing from a very poor family, Gururaj did his primary schooling in Vandse and later completed his PU from Sri Mookambika Institutions in Kollur.

The physical education trainer at the PU college, Sukesh Shetty, was the source of inspiration for Gururaj while during his under-graduation at SDM College in Ujjire, coach Rajendra Prasad provided further training.
