Opposition form human chain in Parliament Complex

MPs from 17 Opposition parties led by Congress on Thursday formed a human chain near Gandhi statue in Parliament House complex on a variety of issues, including special status for Andhra Pradesh and Cauvery issue.

While TDP, which left the NDA last month demanding special category status for Andhra Pradesh, joined the joint Opposition protest, YSR Congress and AIADMK conducted separate protests.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi along with senior MPs from other parties, including Trinamool Congress Derek O'Brien and Kalyan Banerjee, CPI's D Raja, CPM's Mohd Salim and DMK's Tiruchi Siva, held placards raising the demands. The protest took place before the Parliament convened for business.

The joint Opposition was protesting against farmers distress, Dalit atrocities, rising fuel prices, bank scams and sealings of commercial establishments in Delhi as well as demanding special category status for Andhra Pradesh and for solving Cauvery issue.

"All the opposition parties have come together. It is not that we does not want the Bills to be passed. We want that but we also want to raise the issues that affect the people," Azad said after the protest. DMK's Siva said the logjam in Parliament is created by the government and it should be solved by the government, a view echoed by Azad.

Asked about NDA decision to forgo salary and allowances following the washout of the proceedings, Azad said, "they can do that as the BJP has enough money to pay their MPs for next 20 years."
