200 lorry loads of sand seized

Police have seized 200 lorry loads of sand which was being transported illegally in two separate cases on the banks of River Bheema.

The police have taken into their custody 100 lorry loads of sand each, collected at Kerur in Chadachana taluk and near Umaraja.

District Superintendent of Police Nikam Prakash Amrit told DH that four lorries, one tipper vehicle and five boats used to lift sand from the river bed were also seized.

He said efforts were on to trace those behind the illegal extraction of sand. The boats and one of the lorries are from Maharashtra, Amrit added.
