BJP MLA rape case: victim's father dies in jail

The father of the woman who had accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Senger of raping her and attempted self-immolation near Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's official residence on Sunday, died in jail under mysterious circumstances on Monday.

She had tried to set herself on fire over the failure of the police to act against the lawmaker.

The victim's father, who had reportedly been thrashed by Senger's brother and goons inside the Makhi police station in Unnao district earlier this week after the family dared to lodge a complaint of rape, was arrested on a petty charge and sent to jail.

Six police personnel, including the Makhi Station House Officer, has been suspended on charges of laxity, police sources here said.

The victim said on Monday that her father had been tied to a tree and beaten by the MLA's goons after he refused to withdraw the complaint.

A video showing the victim's father sitting inside the police station amid the supporters of the MLA also went viral on the social networking sites. The injuries on his body were also visible in the video.

The victim said that the local police were under the "influence" of the MLA and that they had deleted the names of Senger and his brother from the complaint.

As the family members claimed that he had been "murdered" and demanded the arrest of Senger and his brother Atul, the Opposition pounced on the ruling party.

Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav demanded Adityanath's resignation on moral grounds.

Adityanath said a thorough probe would be conducted into the matter and the guilty would not be spared.

The woman had accused the BJP MLA from Unnao and his goons of gang-raping her.

"The MLA threatened me of dire consequences if I approached the police," she had said.

Senger, however, refuted the charges and termed them a "political conspiracy", hatched against him by his opponents to tarnish his image.
