A kilometre-long elevated skywalk with travelators (conveyors) will connect Peenya Industry Metro station with the Basaveshwara bus terminus, which was meant to be a satellite bus station.

More than 2,000 inter-city buses belonging to three state transport corporations start their trips from the Kempegowda Bus Station and an equal number enter the city, adding to the traffic.

The skywalk, estimated to cost Rs 50 crore, is part of the government's latest effort to decongest the core area of the city by shifting operations of these buses from Majestic to the outskirts.

The previous attempt at starting the services from the Peenya terminal had led to a loss of Rs 12 crore. Commuters preferred to stand on the roadside at Jalahalli Cross to board the buses instead of walking to the bus terminal, nearly a kilometre from the main road. When KSRTC buses did not halt on the highway, they switched over to private buses.

The skywalk plan was mooted during a joint meeting of Bengaluru Development Minister K J George, Transport Minister H M Revanna and officials of BMRCL and BBMP.

BMRCL public information officer and general manager (Finance) U A Vasanth Rao said the walkalator will bridge the gap by offering seamless connectivity from Peenya Industry Metro station.

"We have prepared a conceptual design and sent it to the BBMP since the road below the Metro line falls under their jurisdiction. The walkalator is not exclusive for Metro commuters and would be accessible from the road as well. The project is likely to be taken up under the PPP model," he said.

KSRTC managing director S R Umashankar said they were already shifting the burden from Majestic by starting 60 services from the Peenya terminal. "We have expressed concern about allowing private buses to operate from Majestic and have also offered space in Peenya for building a terminal for them. We hope it will be taken up soon," he said.
