Election officials seize 7.72 kg gold, Rs 30L cash near Dharwad

Poll officials deployed at Kadabagatti checkpost at Alnavar under the Kalghatgi Assembly constituency in the district seized 7.72 kg of gold ornaments, said to be worth Rs 2.55 crore, on Monday.

Officials said the ornaments were being transported without any valid documents and hence, a case of illegal transportation of gold ornaments case had been registered.

The gold was being transported from Goa towards Hubballi, when the officials intercepted the car and confiscated the gold at around 12.30 pm.

Deputy Commissioner S B Bommanahlli, also the chief election officer of the district, said the seizure was done suspecting the gold was being transported illegally for distribution among voters.

Prateek Narvekar of Goa and Vikramsingh Devisingh Rathod of Rajasthan, who were transporting the gold, have been taken into custody. A case has been registered at the Alnavar police station.

In another case, poll officials seized Rs 30 lakh in cash which was being transported without documents, near Gudageri Cross at Saunshi village in Dharwad.

The cash was being transported from Laxmeshwar to Kundgol and the vehicle was intercepted near a checkpost.

The poll officials seized as many as 100 LED televisions which were being transported without any documents near a checkpost in Aurad taluk of Bidar district.
