Lingayat religion: HC to hear plea on June 19

Last Updated 13 April 2018, 18:51 IST

Additional Solicitor General Prabhuling K Navadgi on Friday submitted before the High Court of Karnataka that the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs had received the letter with regard to the request to consider granting minority religion status to the Lingayat community.

Navadgi told a division bench headed by Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari that the ministry has handed over the request to the Ministry of Home Affairs because classification of any section of the population as a religion is done by the Registrar General of India under the Ministry of Home Affairs for the purpose of the census. He further stated that the matter at present is being examined by the Ministry of Home Affairs and added that the further proceedings will take time due to the nature of issues involved in the matter. The court adjourned the matter for hearing to June 19.
