HC lashing: Sack Adityanath, demands Cong

Congress on Saturday demanded the sacking of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath after the Allahabad High Court made scathing remarks against the state government in connection with the Unnao gang-rape case.

"The High Court observations reveal how a chief minister can become deaf, blind and mute to the heinous crime like rape, the custodial death of the victim's father and to the continuous loud cries of the victim's family," Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said here.

Surjewala also dropped the 'Yogi' from the name of the chief minister and referred to him as Adityanath, arguing that a person who protects MLAs accused of rape cannot be called Yogi or ascetic. He also referred to the chief minister by his old name Ajay Singh Bisht.

The Congress leader said under BJP rule, crimes against women have witnessed a 33% increase with 44,936 such cases registered between April 1, 2017, and January 31, 2018.

"The real culprit behind Unnao's victim, who was raped reportedly in June 2017, and who pleaded at the doorstep of the BJP CM and even attempted self-immolation, is no one but the CM, Ajay Singh Bisht alias Adityanath, and he should immediately be sacked," Surjewala said.

In its order on Friday, the Allahabad High Court had observed that the disturbing feature of the Unnao case was that law and order machinery and government officials were directly in league and under the influence of Kuldeep Singh, the BJP MLA accused of the gang-rape.
