CRPF jawans sent to police custody

Last Updated 01 May 2010, 19:01 IST

The jawans along with the kingpin of the gang Jasodanandan, who is a retired PAC sub-inspector, were produced before a district court in Rampur, which sent them to police remand for ten days.

Uttar Pradesh police had arrested six security personnel, including two CRPF jawans, on Thursday and Friday and had recovered a huge quantity of arms and ammunition from their possession.

Meanwhile, the investigation by the Special Task Force (STF) into the modus operandi of the gang so far has revealed that its members used code words to describe the kind of ammunition they required.
For instance, the AK 47 cartridge used to be called “Satyendra” while 303 bore cartridges were mentioned as ‘zero’, STF sources said.
The police has also started counting of arms and ammunition in its various armouries, they said.

Incidentally it is not the first instance of theft from the police and PAC armouries. In 2009 also two armourers were arrested in Shahajahanpur and Gorakhpur on charges of stealing ammunition.
A PAC armourer in Mirzapur had also earlier confessed to having sold thousands of cartridges to criminal gangs of eastern UP and Naxalites in Bihar.
