She is apparently perturbed over the Opposition allegation that the BSP has become a safe haven for criminals. However, she alleged that many of them had been sent to her party by the Opposition to tarnish the BSP image.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Mayawati said a large number of people with criminal background, who were in the Samajwadi Party and other opposition parties, were made to join the BSP under a well-planned conspiracy when the party came to power in 2007. Mayawati, who chaired a meeting of party office-bearers and leaders here on Saturday evening, later expelled about 500 workers, which included a BSP zonal coordinator and some former MPs and MLAs.

She said that more such workers and leaders would be shown the door in the days to come as another list of such people was being prepared.

The Opposition, however, dubbed the “operation clean-up” as eyewash and political drama. “Expulsion of a couple of small-timers is aimed at fooling the people,” they added.
