The sound of music

The sound of music reverberates across the portals of this institution. The different genres of music blend in perfectly, each in sync with the other.

Thanks to the encouragement by the management of the New Horizon College of Engineering, its students have formed different music bands, each with its own identity. There’s Hindustani, fusion, Carnatic and rock genres.

The members have chosen not to title their music club. “We didn’t find the need to represent our passion. Our zeal for music cannot be spelt out,” says Sai, one of the members of Freedom Waves, the most popular rock band in the college.
Freedom Waves has four members and performs classic rock, jazz and blues. Jijo is the vocalist of the band and Sai is base guitarist.

The lead guitarist of the band is Shijo and Venkat is the drummer. “We draw inspiration from anything and everything under the sun. For each performance we come up with new compositions. Most of the time we do away with female voice or else we request a few girls to accompany us,” says Venkat, one of the students. The team has taken part in many inter-collegiate competitions and won prizes at CMR, RVCE, MVIT and in the fest held in their college.

French Fries is another rock band which performs hard-rock. Zeher is a unique kind of music band which is devoted to Hindi songs. Accapella performance is sans any music.

“Whoever wants to have a new music group can form their own team. There is no official band as such in our college. Although we belong to different groups we are not jealous of each other’s success. When it comes to representing the college for completions our faculty co-ordinator for cultural activities takes the decision and finalises the team,” says Monish, who is a part of the rock band Melodic Darkness.
Other than rock lovers, there are also students who are interested in classical and fusion songs. Dolly, who is independent of any band, is a keen listener of western classical and Jahnavi is a trained Hindustani singer.

“Fortunately, our college has a number of talented female singers. Rakshita, Dolly, Neha, Shruti and Maduri can sing all kinds of songs. Mridula, Namrita and Mohitrayi are good in Carnatic,” says Vinod, co-ordinator of the band.
