The primal religion, local culture, festivals, attire along with breath taking scenic beauty brings Kodagu a distinct place in the nation.

The hills kissing the clouds, the stream gushing down the hills, rivers dancing their way all this and more makes it the Kashmir of the South. The beauty of the district is not to be explained but it is to be experienced, say many.

While tourists throng to some popular destination in the district, Nalkunadu is one spot which is not yet has been discovered by tourists prominently. Mainly a trekking spot, temples, valleys, waterfalls and Thadiyandamol hill are what tourists can expect here.

Thadiyandamol hill is 1,717 mts high and is the highest hill in the district. One can see Dakshina Kannada district and the Arabian sea from the tip of the hill. At the foot of Thadiyandamol hill is situated Nalkunadu palace. It is said to be built in 1792 and the historical marriage of Raja Doddaveerarajendra and Mahadevammaji took place in the same palace. The palace has ceiling made of wood exhibiting the intricate talent of the craftsmen of that era.

Earlier the trekker used to stay back in the palace before proceeding to the hill but after Archeological Survey of India restored the palace, the trekkers are not allowed to use it according to their will and wish. The palace which is an architectural marvel remained away from Kodagu’s tourist map due to lack of publicity.

There is no proper bus facility to this spot from Madikeri. There is beautiful Chelavara fall located very closely to the palace. This waterfall is in no way inferior to Abbey fall. The beauty of Chelavara fall must be experienced during rainy season when the falls gushes in its full force.

Another fall named Balyathra is also situated in close proximity to Chelavara falls.  The local residents say that Department of Tourism must promote Chelavara and Balyathra falls in same manner as they did to Abbey and Irpu.
